Dr. Gregg A. Belle is a forensic psychologist and clinical psychologist with 20 years of experience conducting forensic evaluations and risk assessments of sex offenders and mentally ill criminals throughout the Commonwealth of Massachusetts pursuant to both Massachusetts General Laws Chapter 123A and Chapter 123, respectively.
Dr. Belle graduated from Brown University in 1994 with Bachelor of Sciences degree in Psychology. As a recipient of the Chancellor’s Graduate Fellowship, Dr. Belle received his Master’s degree (1996) and Ph.D. (2001) in Clinical Psychology from Washington University in St. Louis. Dr. Belle completed a Harvard Medical School pre-doctoral internship (2000) at the Brockton and West Roxbury Veteran Affairs Medical Centers and completed a postdoctoral fellowship in forensic psychology (2001) from the Law and Psychiatry Program at UMass Medical School.
Since 2006, Dr. Belle has specialized in the evaluation of sex offenders for determination of sexual dangerousness or sex offender classification. Dr. Belle was designated as a Qualified Examiner and appointed to the Community Access Board in 2006. He has also been retained by defense attorneys and various District Attorney Offices throughout the Commonwealth to conduct Sexually Dangerous Person evaluations. Dr. Belle has written over 1000 sex offender risk assessments and provided expert testimony over 300 times in Superior Courts throughout the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
Dr. Belle has been a Designated Forensic Psychologist since 2004 performing court-ordered evaluations of competence to stand trial, criminal responsibility, aid in sentencing, and need for hospitalization. While employed at Bridgewater State Hospital from 2001 to 2007, Dr. Belle conducted over 750 such forensic evaluations. Since that time, Dr. Belle has continued to conduct similar court-ordered forensic evaluations for defense attorneys and various District Attorney Offices throughout the Commonwealth. Dr. Belle also has expertise in conducting Veterans disability service-connection assessments.
Administratively, Dr. Belle has approximately 10 years of experience overseeing both the Qualified Examiner and Community Access Board contracts for Forensic Health Services (FHS) and then MHM Services, Inc/Centurion. Nationally, Dr. Belle has provided sex offender risk assessment consultation and trainings to the Missouri and Tennessee Departments of Corrections and Tennessee Board of Probation and Parole. Dr. Belle has also presented locally and nationally on topics pertaining to sex offender risk assessment and understanding signs and symptoms of mental illness.
Academically, Dr. Belle has been an Adjunct Psychology Professor at Roger Williams University since 2013. Dr. Belle teaches undergraduate introductory courses in Psychopathology. Dr. Belle also teaches forensic master’s level courses in Assessment in Criminal Law and Psychology of Criminal Behavior.
